Uitereas Association—By Electric Telegraph Wellington, Feb. 1 Mr R. Acheson, solicitor, Carterton, has been appointed Stipendiary Magistrate. At the annual meeting of the Wellington Ga9 Coy to-day, the chairman of Directors, Mr D. Anderson, referred to the attempt of the City Corporation to pass a Bill through Parlinment for the compulsory acquisition of the Company's property by arbitration. This, he Raid, no doubt affected the interests of all other Ga3 Companies. The Company had been willing to sell, but the City Council had not yet replied to the letter written last September. This condition of affairs waa most unsatisfactory, hampering the expansion of business. The question vit- ! ally affected the interests of nil other Gas Companies m the colony, and they wouldj he trusted, be enabled to act m conjunction with tbem for mutual benefit. If the power sought by tne Wellington Corporation w. ra ever granted to it or made general, Gas Companies should secure that protection to which he thought they were fairly entitled. The Supreme Court criminal sessions opened this morning before Mr Judge Denniston, who m his charge to the. grand jury congratulated the jury on the small number of serious cases on the list. The most serious was a charge of murder against McKenzie alias Ellis, and the grand jury would have no hesitation m finding that there was sufficient evidence to send accused up for trial.
