Sir, —T {rather inc.idfcnhilly that; " A Busino.-s Mnu," who writes a letter in your Faturdny's issue about tho effect of Prohibit on in Afchbui ton, is not a resident of this thriving, prosperous Horcvr-,'h, a town which is tho envy of many a colonist in other parts of JNew Zealand. It; occurs t<> me that the writer of that jeremiad is identical with one or other of tho itinerant vendors of books?, views, insect powders, photo coupotis, and such ilk, which clflas are becoming more and m^re a source of nuisance- to every housewife of our county. This species " toils not neither do they spin"—except incredible yarns — and Ashbniton residents do well to give them the cold shoulder and short shrift. We have about every class of business represented in the Borough, competition is keen, and prices, with few exceptions, reasonable. Jb'vory penny spent with podlars means so much less going into the legitimate trade of Ashbnrton, and unless the man or woman soliciting custom at the doors of the people is the representative of establishments' doing business in our midst, ai peremptory dismissal, short, sharp, and decisive, should^be givon.
