HALF-YEARLY MEETINGS.

The half-yearly meetings of the Canterbury Baptist Association opened yesterday morning with a devotional meeting in the Tabernacle, Ashburfcon, conducted by Mr J. Marriner, of Spreydon, the Rev. W. Lnmbert, who was announced to conduot the service, being prevented from attending by a family bereavement. There was a very fair attendance, Mr Marriner's address on Life without God being attentively and appreciatively followed. A very profitable hour was thus spent. The visiting delegates were entertained at luncheon at 1 o'clock, a very sumptuous repast bbing piepared by the ladies of the Ashburton congegation and their friends, the "Rev. Mr and Mrs Salter having the leading hand in the arrangements. Following the luncheon, which was attended by about fifty people, the usual votes of thanks were recorded to the friends who had so hospitably entertained the visitors, Mr Toneycliffe, as the ex-President of the Association, voicing his appreciation, and that of the company, of the kindness shown them,and moving the vote of thanks, which Mr Marriner seconded, and the Rev. G. D. Cox, of Lincoln, and Adjutant Harrison, of the Salvation Army, adding a few words of cordial appreciation. The Rev. W. L. Salter responded on behalf of the lanes.
