Christchurch, Feb. 23 The Boer delegates, with Mr Bitchie, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, left by the morning train for Little Biver to witness harvesting operations, with the intention of returning by the next train, an hour later, and visiting the Lincoln Agricultural College on their wav back to Christchurch. F. Hempieman, ex clerk at the Kaiapoi brewery, was charged on threo informations at Kaiapoi to-day for the theft of money from the Kaiapoi Brewery, and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed m his own recognisance for .£225, and two surities of i>225 each. Dunedtn. Feb 23 Thomas Redpath shot himself with a pea rifle shortly after returning from church | at Waihuna yesterday. He had been suffering from insDmnia. Frederick Enlph Payne, two years of age, son of Mr Payne, solicitor, fell over a bank below jhis house and sustained injuries from which ha succumbed. Mr George Dowse, the well-known handicapper, died yesterday. iNVBRCARQu-r,, Feb. 23 At the Police Court to-day Magistrate McCarthy sentenced a passenger to seven days'imprisonment, without the option of a fine, for creating a disturbance by singing m a railway carriage. James Carey ■was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment for indecent behavior m the presence of girls. Pvlmerston North, February 23 At the S. M Court this morning Frederick Backe, who represented himselg as an Imperial artilleryman, and with Buller at Tugela, was sentenced to four months imprisonment on five charges of false pretences. Accused masqueraded the streets of the town for over a week m an orthodox Imperial uniform. Cable advice was received last night of the death m Sydney on Sunday of Mr S. Cohen, who for many years was a well-known resident of Christchurch, and father of Mr M. Cohen, of Palmerston. Deceased was aged 76, and had been a resident of Australia for the past two years.
