Anniversary Day In New South Wales. »-♦ Admiral Fanshawe on Naval Protection. Sydney, January 26 Anniversary Day brought with it much Deeded rain, frequent heavy showers interfering with holiday-making and sports. - Tne anniversary regatta was highly successful. In the All-Comere Single Sculls, J. Tiaycock, Ber, beat C. Towns, 39seca bhd scr, by half a length. The Service Cutters' Haee was won by the American transport ship Glacier's crew, with ten seconds Btart j the Royal Arthur, scratch, second ; and the Naval Brigade third. It was a great race. ■The Royal Arthur's men beat the Yankees by a couple of lengths, but the latter were awarded the vaco on the time allowance. Vice-Admiral Fanshawe was warmly welcomed. At a luncheon, replying to the t'-apfc of his health, he said that it is an eternal and paramount condition to the very existence of the British Empire that the Navy should holii command of the seas. He paid a high tribute to Sir Harry Eawson as a naval commander. Subsequently, replying to Sir E. Barton's welcome on behalf of the Federal Government, Admiral Fansliawe said he approached his duty with the greatest possible pleasure, and he intended to do his utmost for what his special duty was, viz., security for Australia and New Zealand. It began iv n ceiling over a bedroom at Gee's Hotel, through which a kitchen chimney passed. The house, containing twenty-five rooms, wif h most of the furniture, was destroyed. Manson's stock £1000, building and furnituro .£3OO, believed to be insured m the Royal Office. He estimates the loss at .£I2OO to £1500, j £600 worth of new stock being recently received. The Chalmers and Bruce Local Option Polls. * United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Dunedtn, Jan 23 The hearing of-the petition against the Chalmers local option poll was fixed for to-day. There was no appearance against the petition. Mr C. C. Graham, S.M., said he had decided that he had jurisdiction. Mr Adams had stated when the case was called on previously that he would apply to the Supreme Court for prohibition against his I hearing the petition, but he had not done so. He adjourned the inquiry until March. The hearing of the petition against the local option poll at Bruce was commenced at Milton to-day. Messrs F. E. Chapman, W. A. Sim, and D. Reid appeared m support of the petition, and A. S. Adams nnd J. F. Woodhouse to oppose. The petition set out various irregulariti33, and Mr Chapman, m opening, said tha Act might or might not affect the result of a poll, but the poll could be voided though such effect were not proved. But some Act or Acts had a tendency m that direction. In the petition there were five clauses of the Act, it was alleged which tended to defeat the fairness ofthepill. Three of these were positive allegations, and the other two were qualified. Nineteen witnesses were called m support of the petition, when the Court p.djourned.
