Ministering Children's League

The sab of work at St Stephen's yesterday afternoon, promoted on behalf of the Children's Minitteriag League, proved & great auGoets, and the tableaux aad musical programme In the evening attracted a large attendance. Mr and Mrs Alington aad Mrs Denshire worked liked Trojans, and as a result of their efforts, backed by their numerous assistants, the audience was treated to a moat enjoyable entertainment. At the south end of the school room had been erected a stage, on which the various items were performed. In the opening a tableau, * See Saw,* showed a number of children balancing and swinging Half way, an amusing little contretemps occurred, the plank giving way, but no serious acoideut ocoured, and amid much laughter the scene was concluded. The succeeding picture, * Japanese Dancing Girle' was well received, and an enoore demanded, tha coloured lights thrown on the figures making a beautiful scene. This was followed by a glimpae of South African Nurses in uniform, indulging in afternoon tea. Mrs Denshire, who was in excellent voice, then gave a solo with banjo accompaniment* This was followed by another tableaux' Lear (AM Curtis; and Cordelia (Miss Makeig), a. beautiful delineation of a daughter's affection and interest' The next ' Summer, ' was of a different nature, as it represented an idea and not a aoena, and consisted of a group Of young girls (Misses Denshire, Greaeco, F Standish, M Rlokmao, and W Pur* nellj arranged In graceful attitudes, and holding a lovely wreath of roses* A very amusing vocal tableau, entitled 1 Topßy Turvey,' sucoeedad, the giyla doing ! drilJ, and finally appearing to stand on their j heads, the waving feet presenting a very comical appearance. Mr Grace's Bong ' Friar of Orders Gray,' given In a mellow ; baea voice, was especially well received. Perhaps the gem of the evening was ' Three Maids of Lee.' (Misses Upton, Coater, and Greßson, Denshire, Standish and Pilbrow,) with vocal accompaniment by Mra Johnston. Three beautiful and scornful young ladies, turning disdainful aira on their suitors. The reverse Bide of the picture then being shown 'Guardian Angels,' Maksig and Rickman,) waa, by many, thought to be the c ; hef '(Toon/re of Iha evening, and was certainly very pretty. The next, ' tgueen Poppoer,' going to the ' damea,' (Misses Upton and Nanoy Coster), waa anthustlcally reoeivedi 1 The Three Graces,' (Misses F Btandlsh, W Furaall, and Rlokman) was also prebty, while the wooing of King Henry V (Mr H Fouka, Misses Coster and Stnndish) waa a most beautiful scene, with rich dresses and gorgeous colorings Tho ' Gipaey'e Gam.pi* by the company, concluded the tableau, and Yarley's waxworka, shown by Mr L Hobba and Mies ghuiry, retained the interest of the audience to the ends Thanks are due to Mr Grace, of the D.I'C, for the loan of a piano, and Mra Denshire, who is head nf the local league, had a large amount of work in connection with the sale, and also the programme last night, and with Mrs Alington, deserves* every credit for the anoeess of the function, aad the satlsfac* tory financial results. Misses PurneU and others assisted at the stalls, and Bflesura Curtia and Etaton were busy on the stage. The piano accompaniments wetc io the able hands of Shears Qwen and Ourtia

As this ooal Is a good deal oheaper than any other on the market, it should find favour with housekeepers

Farmbhs 1 Union—A meeting of the Committee of the Aefaburton Farmers' Union was held in the A and P Association's rooms this afternoon. There wag a full attendance, and after some minor business had been transacted, it was resolved to hold a general meeting of member on Saturday next, the 31st lost, when Mr Glass will be present.
