The Fourth Contingent

Auckland, March 5 A magnificent send-off was given to the Auckland section of the Rough Riders Con* tingent*. The Mayor entertained at luncheon the contingent, and also His Excellency the Governor and Earl Beaueharnp, the Premier and the Hone. J. G. Ward and Junes Carroll. Patriotic speeches were made by the Governor, Earl Beauchamp, and the Premier. Tha Bough Riders were reviewed in the drillahed parade ground with the Auokland Garrison and the Veterans. The Governor, the Premier, and cno Hon J G Ward addressed the contingent in heartstirring speeches. Messrs Cadman and Thompson were present The contingent of Rough Riders, escorted by over 1000 Volunteers, marched to the steamer Rotokino. The streets along the way were ablaze with bunting and crowded with cheering masses of people from the drillshed to the vessel. Vehicle traffic had to be Btopped, and the approaches to the wharf barricaded. It is estimated 30,000 people witnessed the embarkation. The crowds exceeded those at the jubilee festivities. Lord Ranfurly, Karl Bsauchampt, Countess Ranfurlyand L*dy Coastanoe Knox drove to the wharf. The Rotokino left at 430 p.m. ' and was accompanied to Rangitoto channel by sixteen steamers and seventy yachts. The I Premier and the Hon J G Ward left by the Hinemoa for Wellington. The Hon Carrolf leaves to-morrow for Giaborne.
