BATTLE HYMN OP THE REPUBLIC.

Sir, — la view of the war now commenced between America and Spain — a struggle of freedom and liberty versus cruelty, bigotry, rapine, and oppression — I append a copy of the battle hymn of the Republic, and trust ib will be interesting to your numerous readers. The poem was written m the early part of theJCivil war m the United States (1861-65), and created a great senaatiom (Dhe author ess was Mrs Julia Ward Howe, of Boston, Mass. — I am, etc, Scotus. Mine eyeß have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord, He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored ; He hath loosed the fatal lightning of Hia terrific sword ; His truth is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah ! etc.

I have seen Him m the watch fire, of a hundred circling camps, , They have builded Him an altar m the evening dews and damps ; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps ; His day is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah ! etc.

I have read a fiery gospel writ m burnished rows of steel ; . "Asyedeil with my contemnerßj so with you my grace shall deal, Let the Hero born of woman crush the Berpent with hia heel, Since God ia marching on." Glory, glory, hallelujah, etc.

He hath sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat, He is Bifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat ; Oh ! be swift my soul to answer Him ! be jubilant my feet; Our God is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelu j *h ! etc.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born aoroßS the sea, With a glory m His bo3om that tranßfigureß you and me j As He died to make men holy, let us die to make them free. Oar God is marohing on. Glory, glory, hallelujih ! etc.
