Educational Institute
An ordinary general meeting of the Aahburton section of the North Canterbury Educational Institute was held m the Borough (schoolroom on Saturday. There was a very good attendance, twenty-five ladies and gentlemen being present.
Mr C. D. Hardie gave a resume of the work done at the Dunedin Conference, and received a vote of thanks.
A very large amount of discussion took place on the present system of nomination of teachers.
The following resolution was passed : — " That the Institute be asked to draw up some Bcheme whereby the country teachers should have an equal chance of competing for positions m the town schools with those already on the spot, and whereby the evil* of cauvassing might be done away with. This seotion would specially recommend thab promotions as well as appointments should be subject to the Board's two-year limit ; and also thab any teachers reflecting adversely on fellow teachers m applying for appointments should be disqualified."
MisBBS Dickenson, Newman, and Edkins were elected members of the Institute.
At a committee meeting held subsequently ib was arranged to hold a committee meeting on the second Saturday m May to prepare a programme for the July meeting.
