The motion was earned. The order applying to protection of ferrets, cars, stoats, weasels?, at>d mongoose provides that any person capturing or kil ing any animal dec'ared to be the natural i-nemy of the rabbit, without a permit by an Inspector, is liable to a penalty ot not less than £6 nor more than £10, unless thepersonprovethattheanimal killed or sold or in his possession, was lawfully in his possession, or thab the same was on his premises without his permission or consent. A real drama, says the Figaro of August 26, took place in one of tl c compartments of the reptiles wing of the Jardin d'Acclimatation. Two snakes had simultaneously siezed a rabbit at different ends and beg»n to swallow it. When the keeper perceived the critical nature of the situation he was too late to separate the two Bnakes, one of which, as well as the rabbit, had paaaett inside his companion in captivity. The seventeenth annual general meeting nf the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturng Company was held on Wednesday. The report recommended a dividend at the rate of eighb per cent, per annum. It stated that th« difficulties of the Company had been increased largely by the foolish cutting policy on which some manufacturers embarked. Another factor that could not be overlooked was the demand for low class tweeds, blankets, and flannels. Since the origin of the Company it had paid £463,106 in wages, £313.878 for wool. £30,715 for coal, £20,49b* for soap and oil, and £101,849 in dividends. The balance sheet was the best "Woollen" sheet that would be presented in New Zealand this year. Mr G. H. Blackwell was re-elected Chairman of Directors.
