Wellington, August 14. THE GOVERNMENT LICENSING BllL. Under ihe Government Liceriibing Bill three-fi.ths of a raaj mty of tho3e on an electoral roll will be necessary to ensure the carrying of prohibition in any electoral distn:t, and a bare majority for tho gradual reduction of existing licenses. Minsters are sanguine of cariying their Bill, and thin averting an immed ate dis-, solution. UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. At a meeting of a large number of Parliamentary representatives — Sir James Hector, Chancellor of tho New Z;aW:d University, presiding—it was decided to wait upon Government and urge the necessity of establishing a university here for Hawkea Bay and Wellington. Ihe Ministerial residence in Tinakori road, formerly couupied by Sir Julius Vogel is suggested as a suitable siteMIDLAND RAILWAY COMPANY. The Midland Railway Company's proposals are considered certain to be rejected by the Home, in which case the section from Springfield to Kowai and on to Paterson'g creok, some six or seven miles, will be abandoned.
