"WHY IS THIS THUS?"
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I can play chess a little, but there is a move on the board just now that Ido not understand. The position is this; for the size of the town Ashburton contains a large number of unemployed who are tired inspecting the footpaths and street: corners, and knowing there were publio works going on at the Oheviet I made for anal application to the department for facilities to place men on the works. lam told in reply that they are full tip, and the application for assisted passages is treated with contempt. What I cannot understand is why Chnstchurch should hate all the advantage of shipping unemployed to the Cheviot at the Government ejpeiwe—after I am told they are fall—and aAburton be excluded. There are many in this town besides myself, who would like to know •' Why this is thus T Perhaps you or some of your readers can enlighten us,—l am, etc, W; W. DtJETIEt/D. Ashburton, August 10.
