The racing commenced with a field of four for the Ashburton Hurdles, in which Magpie ran over his opponents in the last mile. The highly-bred Saracen, looking very muscular, went ouc favorite for the Ashburton Stakes, and after indulging Errington with the lead to the shilling stand came away and won by a clear half length. Errington ran a real good colt, and but for slipping in the straight would have given the winner more trouble at the finish. The Netherby High Weight, with Aquarius lott at the post, proved a soft thing for old Erinwho finished as game as of yore, although had Master Royal came a Vittle sooner the result might have been, different. All th« eight on the card battled for the Autumn Handicap, which resulted jna very pretty race. Retina to have the race in hand to, the distance, but Specton and Lori Zetland shot out from the ruck, and Contesting every inch of the run "O'ine, Buddicombe drove the local-bred norse home a winner by a neck. Liberator showed up prominently at the entrance to the straight, but died away at the finish, the rest of the field not relishing the soft going, The Diver, after a lengthened spell, proved too much for the moderate field in the Hovel Race, and was sold to Mr M. Rooney for £13. For the District Welter, Warrington waited on his field to the distance, and swamped hi* opponents in the run home. The Flying Handicap, which was run in the dusk, promised to see Maria Martin* who held '■■ a good lead, declared the winner, but Lad/ Zetland catching her in the last hundrad yards won very easily. Mr M. Stitt, the judge, had one or two close finishes to decide, but his decisions were prompt and in accord with everybody. Mr H. Piper despatched hi* fields well together, on*

only exception being in the Netherby Welter, which was rather misfortune than error. The Secretary, MrE. Saunders, wm ever at his post, and supplied the press and |public with information with commendable promptitude. Mr R. Friedlander, and his assistant, Mr Simpson, had the jockeys weighed out without any delay. Mews Mason and Roberts worked the totalisator, but the day's transactions only totalled £1333.
