Ashburton Market.

MR '-I). THOMAS. ! Mr D. Thomas reports upon the live stock market in the Ashbufton district for the j week ending September 25, as follows, via. : ; —On Tuesday at the A«h'an ton Yards the-, usual weekly sale of live, stock was held. Thfe' att|ridapCo ■of farmers, dealers, and others interested 'was smaller than usual, and generally speaking the biddings were i languid:; at the; same ; lime ..ib' further cecline in values can be quoted. For the future, I venture to prophecy j that any alteration in values- will b. in an upward direction. The catalogue j was a small one, but there was nothing ' brought forward out of the common to tempt ! buyers; such as they were nearly every- , thing was cleared at prices as under. The : totals yarded for the day consisted of 2819 ■■ sheep, 43 head of cattle, and 10 pigs,; of | •which* my entry was made up of 2346 sheep ' and 21 head of cattle. My principal sales j were 195 merino wether, ''s 8d ; 31 meripo . wethers, 10s 7d; 31 merino wethers, 10s 3d; 62 merino wether's; lOs; 28 fat crossbreds, ! 14s 63 ; 28 fat merino wethers, 15s; 13j, merino ewes, 11 lambs, 10s 9d ; 17 cross-? r bred sheep, 10s 6d ; 99 merino ewes 59 lambs, 7s 6d ; 200 dry merino ewes, 4s 4d ; 740" t crossbred hoggets, ;10s ;L 480 crossbred hoggets, lis Bil; 164 crossbred hoggets, lis ! 6d ; 100 crossbred hoggets, lis 6d ; etc. In i cattle the demand for beef was good, but for stores the prices realised were ruinous, j I sold 2 fat heifers at £6 ; 2 steers at £615s ; j 1 fat cow, 16 10s ; 7 fat cattle, £4 7s 6d ; 1 j fat cow, £4 4s 6d:; 1. fat Cow, £5 15s; < springers at £2.53, £2 7s 6d, £2 15s, to £4-: 15s; young cattle from 13s 61 each for j calve 3, to £2 15s for good two year olds. f LAND REPORT. ; ' During the last few months I have dis* posed of the following properties, viz.:— ( Chertsey district, 200 acres to Mr Wilkinson ; j 589 acres, Mayfield district, to,Mr Murison ; 500 acres Westerned district; 1050 acres | Lauriston district; 564 acres Dromore dis- I trict ; 495acresLautiston district ,315 acres Rangitata Island; 63 acres Alford; 500 acres Lyndhurst; and have let several farms upon various terms aud rentals. I note an increased demand for farms of medium size where the quality of the land is good, and j could place several of from 200 to 500 aces j at an advance of 25 per cent upon what could ' have been got at any time during the last three years The demand for good properties exceeds the supply, and to my own know- * ledge there are several people in this district on the lookout for farms, who cannot, be suited, although they are prepared to pay a ; good price for a comfortable horoe.V MESSRS I'RIEDLANDER BROS. Messrs Friedlander Bros, report upon the live stock market, for the week ending September 25:—At the Ashburton Yards on ; Tuesday last a small entry of sheep was j catalogued, at which the attendance was hardly up to the usual average. Biddings ior all classes of sheep were languid, and lots only quitted with difficulty. There is no change in price to quote from last week's sale. Fat merino wethers sold at from 19s 6d to 15s ; fat crossbred ewes from 14s 6d to 14s 9d.; crossbred hoggets from 10s to Us 6d; crossbred ewes and lambs to 13s 9d j and a line of small two-tooths sold at 12s. Privately we sold on account of a client 500 two-tooth crossbreds in forward condition at a price satisfactory to our client. Last Friday we held our fortnightly skin sale, and although the full complement of buyers were present, values of all classes of skins were from 9d to Is below our last sales, no doubt caused by the fall in wool just then cabled from the Home market. We quitted our catalogue of about 700 skins. MESSRS MILES AND 00. Messrs Miles and Co. (per Mr George Jameson) report on the live stock market held at the Ashburton Yards on Tuesday last, as follows ■: —The total number of stock yarded comprised 2819 sheep, 43 cattle, and 10 pigs. The fat sheep pens were filled chiefly with merino wethers, not of the primest quality. These sold at a slight reduction in the prices previously obtained for this class of mutton. The few fat crossbreds that were entered sold at full rates. The store pens were qccupled fqr the, most part by hoggets, for which there was not much demand. Ewes with lan^bs sold well; for this class there is a good enquiry. Now that a heavy rain has fallen all over the district we look for an improvement in prices for all kinds of sheep. Fat cattle are now realising better prices than they have done for some months ; all coming forward that are anything like prime meet with a ready sale. Stole cattle show no improvement. Our sales for the day included ,30 merino wethers at 93 6d; 38 merino ewes at lQs 3d; 26 crossbred ewes at 14s 9d; 166 two-tooth ewes and wethers at 12s ; 110 old crossbred ewes with 105 lambs at 13s; 112 merino ewes at ss. One fat cow, £7; 1 fat heifer, £3 12s 6d ; 3 heifers at £3 ss; 1 cow, £1 7s ; calves, 22s each; and privately during the week a line of merino hoggets at Bs.
