Me John Flofccher, who hns lived here sincrt 1871, died to-day, aaedGO* He was a nntive of Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and was a member of the expedition organised by Dr Kane to search for traces of Sir John Franklin iii the Arctic Circle. Wellington, September 10. The local Co-operative Farmers' Alliance will start business with 664 shares representing 106 applicants, and V 3320 of capital. Directors were appointed to-day, and premises have already been secured. It has benn decided to reduce the nominal capital from £250,000 to £75,000. D'unedin, September 10. - Ihomas Hassell, arreatea at Lyttelton, ban been committed for trial for obtaining money by false pretences. A meeting of railway employees, attended . by, sixty,. carried resolutions affirming the desirability ot establishing an Insurance and S.i^.rannuation Fund, but suggested important amendments in the Commissioners' Bill.
