The annual steeplechase meeting of the Ashburton County Hunt Club was held to-day, m weather simply perfect for steeplechasing. There was a very good attendance of the public on the course, the excellent arrangements of the Committee, carried out to the letter by Mr E. J. Fooks the Secretary, tending to make everybody as comfortable as could be. Mr John Henry of the Commercial, Hotel, had both the luncheon booth under the stand and the outside refreshment booth, while Mr W. C. Davis had the confectioner's booth. The racing began with fair punctuality, shortly after the advertised hour. The Hunters' Hurdle Race, a handicap of 15 soys ; second horse tc receive 3 soys from the stake. Time, 4min 45sec. Pioneer and Donnybrook were scratched. The start showed the order following— Inchkeith, Tommy, Lyndoora, and Beaufort, This was maintained to the first hurdle where Lyndoora fell. Inchkeith had a long lead almost from the first, and at the stand she had very materially increased it. Passing the stand Tommy was second, with Beaufort following, and a big blank between him and the second horse. At the next hurdle, Beaufort came up to Tommy and passed him. This order was kept until the hurdle m the north corner of the course was negotiated, where the two again changed places. It was now evident that the race was m the hands of the mare unless something very untoward occurred, and considering that the owner of Inchkeith was up and riding his maiden race, the something untoward was n«t a remote chance. However, nothing did occur and he piloted his mare m an easy winner, Tommy quite twenty lengths behind second, and Beaufort a poor third. Mr Patterson who claimed his maiden allowance of 71bs declared 3|lbs overweight, and so rode lOst 10|lbs. He was cheered on reaching the weighing stand. Hunt Glub Cup Steeplechase, a handicap of 30 soys ; second horse to receive 3 soys and third horse to receive 2 soys from the stake. The four who faced the starter out of a field of seven—Enterprise, All Over, and Glentui having been scratched—got away. with Morok leading, The Mount next the lilac colors, Pioneer following, with, Glen m the rear. A jump negotiated and Pioneer and The Mount changed places. Then Morok and Pioneer made a long headway at the north corner, whore Pioneer led for a time. Morok, however, after the next brush pulled out and led past the stand, jumping beautifully, as did also his follower. Pioneer, however, came down at the second jump of the grand stand treble, but the rest negotiated all safely. Pioneer was got on the road again and chased the trio. Had he kept his legs from this out he might have had a show, but at the back of the course he again came down, and was out of it. Morok meanwhile had been working up a strong lead, and at the hurdle that proved fatal to Pioneer's chances, he was a I quarter of a mile to the good of all hands. ] The rest of the run was an easy wi* for f him, and he Gantered m chains ahead of i the Mount, with Glen about the same distance behind tho second horse.
