Frienda of the Duke of Portland assert that the latter asked for the hand of Princess Louise, and her Majesty refused to consent, hence the coldness between the Duke and the Prince of Wales, and the absence of Royalty from his . Grace's wedding. This is also alleged to be the reason why the customary presents from the Royal family were not sent on that occasion.
