Sir Cunliffe Owen, in reply to an inquiry by Sir Graham Berry, has stated the colonies are not required to make any definite contribution to the proposed Imperial Institute, but may subscribe whatever suras they please.

COLONIAL TIMBER. October 2. An exhibition has been arranged to be held at Messrs Ransomes and Co.’s works, Chelsea, for the purpose of testing the qualities of colonial timber and the uses to which it might be applied. Australian tallow remains at the following quotations Average qualities beef, 235; mutton, 25s fid. The total stock of tallow in London to-day is 15,500 casks. New Zealand frozen mutton, prime quality, selling at 4d to 4 tfd. The third senes of wool auctions closed to-day, the tone of the market, weak. The French barque Glaneuse, 48a tons, from Charente to Melbourne, with

a cargo of spirits, has gone ashore on Lonsdale, Port Phillip Heads, and is in a critical condition.

The fcarpue Glanfiuse is expected to become a total loss, but the cargo will probably be saved. No loss of life occurred ty the wreck. REVENUE RETURNS. Sypnkt. October 4 The revenue of New South Wales or the last quarter amounted to Xr,660,000, being a decrease ot £5500 as compared with the September quarter of last year. DEMONSTRATION.
