“THE HORRID EXAMPLE.”
To the Editor. Sir, —The way in which you have dragged out of W. R. Whitehorn (whoever he is) the frank acknowledgment that his motive in being put into a cottage outside the Town Uelt was to claim a vote at the forthcoming election for his employer, is particularly enteresting at the present moment, showing as it does the extraordinary tactics of Mr Ivesa’s party, and their influence with those employed by him. The “ horrid example ” Whitehorn has made of himself is quite sufficient to show that even twenty-six years behind the scenes as a newspaper man, or forty years graduating in printing offices (if that includes the skilled artisanship he boasts about) are not sufficient to qualify such a scurrilous writer for what he is pleased to term “ the journalist’s inevitable destiny” —the Old Men’s Home. After so many years as a newspaper man (?) W. R. Whitehorn has not improved in the “running,” as even in his old age he has not guarded against falsehood. He states that Mr W. H. Zouch is on the electoral roll claiming his vote as a “journalist.” If the poor old man had read the roll through he could have seen that Mr Zouch’s claim was under th o freehold qualification, and not as stated by him. To say much more about Mr Whitehorn would be unkind, as it would only wound the feelings of so fine a specimen of truth, wit, and humor, and indeed by taking further notice of W. R. W. it would be depriving those still “ behind the scenes” of pursuing their tender mercies in the direction of “ fitting the cap” on the individual who pulls the strings for a “ residential vote.” Freehold Elector.
