[per press association.] Remittance Man Missing. New Plymouth, To-day. A man named Jackson Gilmour is reported to the police as missing. He is well connected in England, and a remittance is awaiting him in the bank from Home. The Premier’s Patronage Solicited. Wellington, To-day. Messrs Joubert and Twopenny have written to the Premier, expressing the hope that he and the other members of the Government will attend the opening of the International Exhibition in Christchurch on April 10. Mr Hall replied that it is impossible to say what the arrangements of ministers may be in April, but that they will be glad to attend if they can do so, and that no doubt a Minister or Ministers will be able to accept the invitation. Accident to a Jockey.

A sad accident happened on the racecourse this morning. Thos. Monaghan, the rider of Fleur de Lys, was doing a final gallop before the Cup race, together with the rider of Somnus, when he ran on to a post by the rail leading to the Grand Stand and fractured his left leg just below the knee. Ho was at once conveyed to the Hutt, where Dr Wilford recommended his removal to the Hospital, which was done. The full effect of the accident is not yet known. Another Fire. Christchurch, To-day. Shortly after 4 o’clock this morning, a fire was discovered at Fisher’s grocer’s shop, High street. The Fire Brigade mustered rapidly, and the fire was extinguished before much damage was done. The damage from fire and water is estimated at LIOO, which is fully covered by insurance. The Weather. The weather to-day is very hot, the thermometer registering 94 in the shade. Good Yield. Dunedin, To-day. The Phoenix Company at Skippers have sent down a cake of 140 ozs. of gold, obtained from 78 tons of stone.
