AUCKLAND
Agricultural and Horticultural Society. Yesterday the first show of the above Society took place at Mr. Hart’s “ Exchange Hotel” when we were much pleased to see a large aud most respectable company i ncluding many of the ladies of Auckland. On entering the large room, it had a most pleasing appearance, from the neat manner in which the various artides sent for exhibition were arranged, and the flowers, fruits,and vegetables, were of a very superior qua'ity. Messrs. Betts, Cleghorn, and Edgerly, were appointed judges, and prizes were awarded for the best Cabbage, ((able)- -Government Gardener, Diito, Mr, Cretnay, Cauliflower,.,..* Mr. Rough, Potatoes, (Derwent red) Mr. Berry, Ditto, (white native, improved).... Mr. Church, Turnips, .... .... Mr. Graham, German Greens , ........Mr, Graham, Onion, (potato,) Mr. Church, Pease Mr. Mason, Windsor Beans, .... Mr. Plummer, Kidney ditto, .... Mr. Mason, Cucumber, • • Mr. Graham, Vegetable Marrow , .... Mr. Young Carrott, .. Mr. Rough, Lettuces, .... .... Mr. Rough, Hops, Government Gardener, Strawberries, • • ..... Mr. Clarke, Cherries and Apples.... Mr. Rough, Flower Bouquet, Mr. Bennett,. Greatest variety of Flowers. .Government Gardener. Clove Carnation, ........ Mrs. Connell Moss Rose and Holy oak, Mr. Clarke Ranunculus Marigold,. ...Mrs. Mathew. Gladiatus, and other Cape Bulbs, Mr. Rough. Geranium. Mr. Scott, Epsom Hearts’s Ease, ..Government Gardiner. Alter the Exhibition of Horticulture, Messrs, Betts, Cleghorn, and Macilwain, being appointed judges, proceeded to the Government Domain at 2 o’clock, to judge the stock, when prizes were awarded for the Best Bu>l. Ayrshire breed, Mr. Fairburo Bull Calf ...» .... Ditto C0w.... .... Mr. Scott, Epsom Cow and Calf Mr. Mason Entire Horse,,...Mr, Scott, Auckland Mare and Foal, .... Mr. Kennedy. Pam .... Mr. Kempthoine, Ewe, .... ~.. Mr. Williams, Ewe and Lamb .. Ditto. The purity of Mr. Clarke’s Ewe and Ram, was particularly admired. Prizes were awarded for the best made Plough, and lor the best machine exhibited for dressing the New Zealand Flax. The second show of this valuable society takes place on Tuesday Feb, 27. 1844. * THE DINNER. In the evening about Forty gentlesat down to dinner, which was got up in a manner that reflects great credit on Mr. Hart. C. W. Ligar, Esq., presided, and when the cloth was removed the chairman requested the secretaay, W. Church, Esq., to read over the names of the parties to whom the various prises were awarded. The usual loyal toasts having been given the chairman called for a bumper, when he proposed success to the Royal Agricu tural Society of. England,” and prefaced the toast with hoping that the Ack’and Society might follow in the steps of the parent societies in the mother country. Other toast followed and the meeting separated Highly pleased with the events of the day.
