Taranaki 26 December 1844 Friend, Te Paratene, Greetings to you there at our home at Waiau. My love for you remains, for you and Hauauru, Iriah[?], Taniuka[?], and others of your chiefs. But don't perhaps forget me, even though I have gone away to this land. Perhaps you may wish to come and see the people of this land, so I can weep for my dear friend, Taihaka[?]. Young man, I've a problem, I cannot visit you and talk, so we can jest, and you can debate with me and I answer you back. And it's the case that I perhaps cannot get to visit you soon. But may you live peacefully, and look after your Pakeha, show affection for them all. For you are the chief who is liked[?] by all the Pakeha of Hauraki. Keep on writing me letters.
