Castle Point Feby. 9 1853 Dear Sir, On arriving at home and finding that you had not returned this way has I had heard you intended doing I felt anxious to inform you that John Sutherland had not removed also the reason for his not moving, fearing you might hear some false report regarding his not moving and think he was paying no respect to the notice you sent him. But when the reason is explained I think you will not feel displeased and if on the contrary you must blame me for it. When the natives saw we intended to remove every thing of the place they felt anxious for them to remain I told them it could not be allowed and colected the cattle ready to put them acrost the River the following morning the natives again came to us wishing us to let them remain and Sutherland also and that if the ware pleased with the payment of this place the would sell that, which was the first time the ever spoke of selling it but had always told me the never would sell it. I then thought it best to let the cattle remain thinging that if the cattle and Sutherland was once off the place the might feel more careless about selling. I then told them that I would let the cattle remain till I returned from Wellington or till I had seen you. But that Sutherland was to pay them no rent and that his lease was of no more use that what the got for the cattle remaining thair till March the ware to get from me which the agreed to a once. I made them understand that if the did not join to this block or sell it at the same time that I should remove every think of the place as soon as I returned from Wellington and as long as we done enough to convince them that if you gave us notice to quit that in any other place we must obay. I think if we had done more we should have done harm has I think the same cause will have the same affect as it did with this place had you returned this way it would have been explained to you hear but I was in hopes of seeing you in Wellington ware I could explain it all but I hope to be in Wellington again in the corse of a week on two. I should have sent this by the native but the had left for Wellington the day before I arived at home but I hope you will get it before you see them for when you know how the thing stands you might get the said land added to this block. With our best respects hoping you have returned safe I remain your obedient servt., T. Guthrie.
