Auckland Novr. 1st, 1870 My dear Mr.McLean There is very little news - everything profoundly quiet - Our relations with the King party are improving daily -a few attempts are made to get up sensational stories, but there is generally not even the semblance of truth in them. I saw a story in one of the papers the other day that a body of natives was collecting at Te Akeake just at the back of Tauranga - my brother Hopkins writes to tell me that it was a party assembled to do honor to old Ngahuruhuru and Wi Parera - the former went to fetch away his runaway wife who thought herself safe with the hauhaus - In fact I could not have believed that native matters would settle down so quickly. I only wish that wretch Te Kooti was finished up - and then every irritating cause would be removed - Hauhavism is I believe dying out - and it is reported that Te Whiti has started a new Karakea - Aihipene Kaihau is making the most of it having reported to Melsop that Te Whiti wants the King to consent to fight at Taranaki. Now I believe the contrary is the case - I believe that the foundation of the New Religion is perfect Peace - However you will hear all from Parris. I send you telegram received from Puckey yesterday. The Native Lands Court has decided the Waihi case in favour of Te Hira and Moananui as representatives of Ngatitamatera. The Court could give no other decision in the face of the evidence adduced in Court. I go to Waikato tomorrow morning 6 1/2 a.m. by coach. I take Marshall and Maning with me. The latter looks very unwell and perhaps the run will do him good. He will also assist in getting the "returned rebels" allocated on the different blocks of land which will be set apart for them. The Governor wants me to delay my next Bay of Plenty trip till he goes. He says he is expecting you - December is the month named - I will however write again on this subject. Yours faithfully, Hy.T. Clarke.
