Wellington 29th. March 1871. My dear McLean, I am very sorry to say that we are having more trouble with that designing ruffian, Mc. Donald. The enclosed letter from Carkeek was received this morning. I understand that Carkeek is acting under instructions from you. It is impossible that we can allow this sort of thing to go on. After two decisions of the Court is favour of the purchase, and your liberal adjustment, we must absolutely let them know that what you decided be carried out in the spirit in which you put down old Ngawaka, - "The land is mine. I will give you what I please." It is clear that McDonald has put himself withing the reach of the law by obstructing Carkeek. I think, and Sewell agrees, that you should let McDonald know that you insist upon his refraining from further obstructions, and that if he interferes again with any surveyor under Government instructions, the law will be put in force against him. It is becoming too irritating to hear, that after all the patience exercised, and the sacrifices made in this matter, the Government of the Colony is to be bearded by one Pakeha instigating a mob of Maoris, who, but for him, would give no trouble. I cannot help thinking that Kemp must have scamped his work. He was left in this district for the express purpose of directing what the Reserves and their boundaries were to be. Seems to have disregarded his instructions in what he did do, and left without finishing even what he professed to do. We have no other trouble on hand. Gisborne is still at Dunedin, but returns per "Phoebe." Has been ill, but is better. Bell is at Dunedin, Featherston has not decided whether to go by "Frisco or Suez; most likely the latter. In the absence of colleagues, I shall give him no instructions, but only appointment. Ormond, no doubt, keeps you informed, about Te Kooti, etc. I hope to get to Napier and Taupo by the end of April. I want to see what has been done with roads The Governor will get to Christchurch overland from Otago about end of this week; thence, weather permitting, Hokitika, where he wants "Luna" to call for him about 10th.
