[Letter to Charles Nairn Esq, Pouurerrere] 17 November 1858 Maraekakaho My dear Sir When I bought you sheep I bought for the purpose of keeping them and putting them on Domet's runn. Since that time I found that Domet wishes to stock his runn and keep for himselfe. At one time he wished me to take the run for a long time and keep his own few sheep on some terms. Now that he has honoured the loan of some money to buy the land on the run he wants me to pay a long rent for his run which I do not wish to do. Loseing the right of Domet's runn I have no more for aney more sheep. I went to Alexander since I saw you and he said he would take the sheep of my hands as I bought them to be put on the said runn and as Domet wanted sheep the least thing he could do is to take the sheep of my hands as I was at a great deall of troubble on his account. I then told Alexander and Charleton that I came to Napier to place some money three hundred and twenty five pounds sterling to your credit at the bank at Napier and if they wanted the sheep they would have to pay me as I wanted my money for others purposes. That they told they could not do but would give bills at tow months which would be cash at the bank as Domet money had not yet come to hand and when you or me would present the bills that they would be cashed and if the bank charged interest that they Alexander and Charleton would charge Domet. I then went to the bank and asked them if they would cash the bills and they said they would. When I was told this I took the liberty of using your money when I found that your money would be all right. I was much anoyed when I herd I lost Domet run when he told me I was to have for seven years. I leave you this when I saw you I thought I would meet you hear. As I shall not be at home John MacLaclan will take charge of the sheep. In hopes to se you soon and give you all the particulars about the Pataea country. I remain yours truly Alexander McLean
