Napier June 21 - 1870. My dear McLean, I wrote you at length yesterday and have not much to say today. I saw Mr. Williams (Mangateretere) yesterday afternoon and without in any way committing you to further connection with the business I have an understanding that he goes on for the present as before. This was necessary until it is fixed whether or not Hart is right about your being liable for the rent. He only understands that the matter is to stand over until I have seen you upon it. You have my Telegram of today sending you the latest Waikaremoana news. I quite think we have to be a little firm before we shall see the end of the Urewera business but I also think that a shew of firmness will settle the business. However you will have settled about all that before this reaches you. The new R.M. Rochfort I saw today I should say he was a stick he may be better than he looks I hope he is. I send old Tareha down by the St. Kilda to be there if wanted. He is also well away out of the hands of these harpies who are sticking to him. I shall be ready by Sunday if you can send the Luna for me - there is no chance or likelihood of a chance otherwise. Yours always J.D. Ormond. Sutton has just been to me he says he has purchased 5 shares out and out of Mangateretere and will have another tomorrow. This would leave Tareha and Raruria and Karaitiana only to deal with. I have kept him on the string and will see him again before I leave. If Hart is right about your liability you may have to deal yet. J.D.O.
