MAORIS FOR IMPERIAL SERVICE

♦ MUCH SATISFACTION. (BT TELEORAPH.— SPECIAL TO THE POST.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The decision of the Imperial Government to accept the services of a contingent of Maoris has created much satisfaction among those members of the Native population* who are eager' to stand shoulder to shoulder with other subjects of the King. Further information regarding the methods to be followed in forming the force is being anxiously awaited. A considerable number of men who would probably be eligible have received some training in military ideas and operations as members of volunteer corps, bnt one of these men, who is keenly interested in the proposal, declared yesterday that the force will require a great deal of training before it can be despatched. He suggested that arrangements should be made for the training of volunteers in their own districts, so that the heavy expense of maintaining a central camp for a lengthy period would be avoided. The finishing touches could afterwards be given by a shorter period of constant drilling and shooting practice in camp before the contingent was despatched. WAIROA, This Day. The news that the Government had accepted a contingent of Maori warriors has caused unbounded satisfaction in this district. The Tairawhiti district is allotted one hundred and eighty. Leading chiefs are now meeting at Wairoa, where sixty men volunteered in one hour.
