Of rounc if soid«> of the wealthy would contrihtitp £l'"i'lO apiece the qn<"=tion would be fjuicklv disposed of. He rend a letter from .Mr H. S. S. Kyle. M.P.. intirrating thn' it wns impossible to R.n a jjrant'on this year's Supplementarv Estimates, but he would do what he eonld at a future date. The price of th*» protierty was £S-jOO, nnd the proposal would be to raise a loan. Mr C. J. Wilkins said that tho yout of Fendalton werr considerably hand: .-apped through lack of a certain are for playinjr. If a district were brough irp to date and possess** o' s,,rh f *" a ttiresi as a park, property was enhance :u value, and any iiicr<'a»e in rates wa jffset by the increase in valuation. The Need of Humanity. Mr A. A. McLacbtan caid that if no thing was done to acquire this very suit able 21 acres, within 21 years all tba area would be thickly populated. H emphasised the necessity of providinj the broadest possible cjcpans*- of opei land so that people would not be cramp t>d in mind and body. Dr. Chilton hac preached the need of humanity for fresl air, and tho sooner they converted al fiossible open spaces into gardeus thi sooner they would be on the way tc a system of right living. The chairman explained that the rate was based on interest and sinking fund af 8J per cent., over a number of years In answer to a question, Mr Purneli «aid that there would have to be a poll The object of the meeting would be tc iscertain what measure of support would •>e forthcoming, so that they could de •ide whether they would be justified in going to the poll. People paying rate* on El in wood park would not be expected to pay for the new park.

Mr Wilkins moved that the meeting approve of the acquisition of "Coldstream Lodge" ns a park and playing area for Fendalton. and ask the Waimairi County Council to take a poll of the ratepayers in the proposed loan area at the earliest opportunity. The motion was seconded.

Mr H. W. Candy spoke in support, and said that after they had acquired the area, he would like to sec clubs started there —especially a bowling club. Another speaker dilated upon the attractions a herd of deer would be to the park. A note of pessimism was sounded by Mr H. Kitson, who said that in view of the financial stringency, the present time waa not opportune to launch out in an expenditure of £BSOO on a park that waa not absolutely necessary. During the next two years New Zealand and Christchureh, and Fendalton, the Harden suburbs, would he well and truly up against it, and he would like to see the clouds roll by first before they imposed a further burden on the ratepayers. Mr G. Gardner said that they had had anxious and bad times in New Zealand before, and before they all got up j to Wniraairi Cemetery there would be anxious and bad times again. The world could not stand still and it seemed incredible that a district like Fendalton should be the last place in Christchureh to get such an area. "If you miss the chance of acquiring this area," he added, 'you will miss a chance that may never come agnin." Another speaker also took Mr Kitson to task for his remarks, and Mr Kitson replied by saying that he spoke purely as a ratepayer —which he had a right to do. (Applause.* The motion was put to the meeting and carrie*} on a show of hands, a substantial section voting against it. A committee consisting of the executive and the Rev. F. B. Redgrave, Messrs H. H. Hanna, H. V. Penlington, H. TV. Candy, J. Bates sen., and H. J. Buttle was appointed to po into the matter, and to report to the Burgesses * Association, which would then call another public meeting.
