Oamaru, November 1. John Atcherley, employed at Redcastle, made a deliberate attempt to commit suicide yesterday by cutting his throat with a razor. He has been brought to the hospital, and lies there in a critical state.. Auckland, November 1. At about two o'clock yesterday morning the police made a descent upon a house in New North road, when a shocking state of immorality was disclosed. A number of young men were on the premises along with girls whose ages ranged from fourteen to sixteen years. At the Police Court to-day the two eldest girls were sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the younger girl to one month, and the other discharged, as it was her first offence. Wellington, November 1. At the Supreme Court this morning William E. Marsdeu, who was convicted at the last sitting of the Supreme Court, and remanded in order to allow the probation officer to make a report, was brought up this morning. The report was unfavourable, and the Chief Justice sentenced him to twelve months' imprisonment. The authorities are still prosecuting inquiries re Captain Cain's death, and, should the result of these warrant it, an information will be laid. It is understood that a coroner's inquest will be held on the remains, with a view to ascertaining by whr>m ami in what manner Captain C;:iu came by his death.
