THE CEMETERY. To the Editor of the Taranaki Herald.
Silt, — Allow me through the modium of your paper to thank the parties who have enabled me to replace tho Norfolk Island pines in the cemetery, aud to apologise to one of those whom I stated wns culpable of tho act which destroyed the former ones, for a mistatetnent of the facts, as he was I find totally ignorant of what had been done. I wish some one would doriso a plan for protecting the shrubs in the cemetery, short of closing the place against the public. The other day I found the grave of Mrs. Corbett decorated with the flowers of a certain plant growing on the grave plot belouging to the family of Mr. Standish near adjoining. It is the only plant of the sort I think in the cemetery, and the broken ends of the branches of that identical plant, raises in my mind a strong suspicion whence the means of decorating Mrs. G. Corbett's grave were obtained. No one saw it done. This is only a sample of the hundreds of cases continually occurring. It will afford me great satisfaction to acknowledge the receipt of tho six missing magnolia trees, &c, missing now eighteen months or two years. Only a year or two ago our community was shocked by the murder of one who was reverenced, respected, and beloved by every person young and old in this Province, par excellence a " chiistian." The trustees set apart a conspicuous spot as a site for a monument iv the cemetery, subscriptions invitoJ, and there the matter has to all appearance ended. Will no one stir to erect some memorial to hand down to posterity the memory of the worth and virtues of the late Rev. Johu Whiteley. — I am, &c, W. M. Cbompton. New Plymouth, October 18, 1870.
