ENNERGLYNN COALMINE.

As previously stated, a proposal is afoot to reopen the Ennerglynn coalmine, Brook street (near the Reservoir) and in connection therewith Mr A. H-! Hounsell recently wrote to tne Cawthron Trust soliciting assistance in a certain direction. The greatest depth to which prospecting has been carried ■ at tho mine is 330 ft. It is between the old l'JOft lover and the 330 ft' depth that Jt is. suggested that immediate operations should be undertaken. Eventually however, deeper prospecting would be done and the country proved. Mr Honnsell, in hisJetterto the Cawthron Trust, said: "The proposition is now before local capitalists, and it is suggested that under the powers vested in your board you might favourably con-i ■Mclr tho question., of assisting any' local efFort to the extent of subsidising' ■ l £ tor £, say, tip; to £1000 ; this sum to be repayable! by the company, siiouid = operations pro re successful, at" the ra-te or, say, £SM) per annum plus interest charges'' Enclosed with the application tfjjro letters from Mr Geo. Wise, wao oiscovored. tho seam and worked both m the main shaft and iii the winze; from Mr F. A. Bamford who was secretary to the company -which formerly;worked the property ; and from Air U. F. Worley, "Director of the Nelson School.of Mines. The application claimed incidentally that the successful development of the mine would have the effect of reducing the cost of coal to, the small consumer. It was submitted that to assist in deciding the question ac to the-continuance of the coal measures outcropping oh the eastern side of the Waimea basin should come within the powers vested in the Trust •■On-the 20th inst., Mr W. Rout secretary to the Cawthron Trust, replied to Mr Hounsell as follows:—"Yourletter, with enclosures, was read to the Trustees at their meeting , held last evening. The Trustees expressed sympathy with tiie proposal Mibniitted, but expressed regret that they could not entertain the e.iid proposal?' The promoters of the venturj are applying to the Acting-Minister of Finance for permission to'float a company ■ with a nominal capital of £5000. going to registration on a subscription of £2000.

A fire in the mine was the cause of stoppage in working it. When the. fire occurred a 14ft seam was being worked, at a depth of about ]50ft. Combustion was caused through stacking the slack in, the stopqs instead of removing it front the mine. The coal is a high-class lignite, and the prospects are considered by experts to be fa\ curable for a payable coalmine on a moderate scale.
