The flag fell to a good starb. Saltator then made play from St Florian, this pair on the left being attended by Matchbox in the centre, and then came Speed on the extreme light, St. Hilaire and Ladas, with Athlone and Hornbeam the wbippers. At a fair rate Saltator continued in command to the T Y.C. winning post, where Matchbox, who had been driven to keep his place, carried his colours to the fore with St Florian in immediate attendance. Thereupon Saltator dropped away, and Ladas, who was catching hold of the ground in grand style, went on third from Speed, St. Hilaire, and Athlone. In commencing the descent Ladas passed St. Florian, and as Matchbox was sprawling a little at this point Watts shot the favourite slightly to the front just before entering the Abingdon Mile bottom. In the next hundred yards Matchbox, under high pressure, came again, and having reached the neck of Ladas thwe was a squeeze for a few strides, after which the Newmarket " crack " began to make a gap, and in a very pretty and exciting race he ultimately won in irreproachable style by a length and a-half. At an interval of four lengths Athlone finished third, just in advance of St. Floriau, with St. Hilaira fifth, Speed sixth, Hornbeam teventh, and Saltator hst. Time, lmin 44Jsec. Ihe flag fell without a failure, and Mecca, holding a centre berth, at once shot out from Ciraeo. They were followed by Throstle, Jocasta, and Lady Minting, on the right, clear of Orlet and Amiable, and on the left were La Nievre, Veuia, Vicuna, and Aminte, with Marguerite II and Springray to the immediate left of Mecca. Before reaching the Bushes Cameo had disappeared from the vanguard, and Mecca continued to show the way from Lady Minting, Jocasta, and Throstle, the second lot consisting of La Nievre, Amiable, and Orlet, Indescend-

ing the hill Jocasta was in trouble, and at the same time her stab'e companion. Mecca, resigned to Lady Minting, the pair coming oil from La Nievre, Amiable, and Throstle. Before entoriug the Abiugdon Mile bottom Amiable passed La Nievre, and splitting the two leaders half way up she then caught Lady Minting hand over hand, and won easily, at last, by threo lengths ; four lengths between second and third La Nievro was fourth, Orlet fifth, Thros le sixth, Jocasta seventh, and Springray eighth, wifca Marguerite II and Venia a long way off next, and Cameo last.
