DANZIG DRIVE

SHIFTING TACTICS PAVING THE WAY PROPAGANDA BLAST HEBE FOBSTER'S ROLE By Telecraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received August 25, 11..10 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 25 Germany's shifting tactics are easily discernible in the training of every available propaganda gun on Poland's imminent, "invasion" of Danzig. A hint of the revival of the methods which preceded the Sudetenland crisis was given overnight, and the full blast was released in the morning newspapers throughout Germany. It was clear that an intensive campaign was being prepared, as motorcars overnight carried propaganda officials between the Chancellery and the office of Dr. Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda. This morning's newspaper headlines on reports of the alleged massing of Polish troops on the Danzig frontier read: "Advance on Own Initiative," "Polish Army Refuses to Obey Warsaw." Blaming Poland The British United Press correspondent sees in this possibly the last phase in propaganda designed to lay the blame on Poland when Germany marches in "to restore order from chaos." The Lokalanzeiger sums up the urgency of the situation by declaring that there is no time to be lost. Informed circles in Berlin declare that Herr Forster's appointment to the Danzig Presidency has already removed Danzig from relationship with Poland, but that it is only the first step aimed at the restoration of the Free City. It is asserted that Herr Forster will next announce that Danzig is a part of Germany and call on Herr Hitler for help against the Polish Army, exactly repeating the role of Dr. Seyss-Inquart in Austria. It is still believed in Berlin that Britain and France will not fight. The appointment of Herr Forster, said an earlier message, is officially confirmed in Berlin, where it is interpreted as the establishment of the ' authoritarian regime under Herr Hitler. It is officially stated in Warsaw that the appointment is a violation of the Danzig Statute, the execution of which is guaranteed by the League of Nations Committee of Three, comprising Britain, France and Sweden. Closing of Border A German official news agency message from Danzig says that the authorities are closing the Danzig border as a counter-measure to the Polish closure. The Danzig Vorposten says the police confiscated a freight van containing munitions, steel helmets, gas masks, land mines and machine-gun parts, and arrested several people, who were charged with smuggling arms for the Polish minority. •

Germany lias informed the Polish Government that the warship Jvonigsberg will, not visit Danzig on Sunday as arranged, but that the training ship Sell les wig Holstein will go there instead and will anchor at 8 a.m. tomorrow. The officers will visit M. Chodacki, Polish Commissioner in Danzig, according to original plans.
