CANNOT RETREAT

PLANS OF THE NAZIS SPOKESMAN'S ASSERTION DEMOCRACIES' STRENGTH REALISATION TOO LATE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 20, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 19 "It would be as big a disaster for Germany to turn back now as to lose a war," said a Nazi spokesman, reports the Berlin correspondent of the Times, who adds that there is reason to believe that Herr Hitler's plan for a settlement of the Danzig question may be put into effect in the next few days.

The Allgemeine Zeitung says: "We can count on the fingers of our hands how many more days the Poles will be masters of the situation."

Official circles emphasise that Germany will not forgo any of her demands whatever the cost. It appears that the British and French attitude has at last been appreciated, but that it is too late to enable Germany to back down. The anti-Polish press atrocity campaign has incrensed, but is not impressing the public, whose attitude is that of worried apathy. The International Parliamentary Congress at Oslo, Norway, telegraphed to Herr Hitler a resolution urging the Powers to'settle their disputes peacefullv.

The Warsaw correspondent of the Times says German troop movements are not yet so abnormal as to be concentrations fof an immediate attack, but the Poles are watchful. The Danzig Nazi leader, Herr Forster, handed Danzig's new army its colours, a swastika surmounted with a deaths-head. Thousands of people watched a parade of 1500 men with machine-guns and anti-tank guns. Herr Forster said that Danzig was able to protect herself and no longer needed a note in writing from the League of Nations.

The Danzig correspondent of the London Daily Herald, Mr. Scott Watson, has been given 12 hours to leave Danzig because he has allegedly sent out false reports.
