DEATH OF COUNTESS
EARL OF SEARELD'S WIDOW NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATIONS [by telegraph—own correspondent] DUNEDIN, Monday Advice was received by cablegram to-dpy that the death had occurred at Brighton, England, on Wednesday of Nina, Dowager Countess of Seafield, widow of Francis William Ogilvie Grant, 10th Earl of Seafield. The dowager Countess was the daughter of the late Major George Thomas Evans, of North Otago, who was an ex-Imperial Army officer and a well-known resident of the Oamaru district. In 1574 she married Mr. Francis William Ogilvie Grant, who lived for many years at Te Aneraki, and a few years after the marriage they removed to Oamaru. It was while there that her husband succeeded to the Earldom of Seafield. On his death in 1888, six months after accession, their son James became the 11th Earl, and in 189S he married Miss Nina Townend, eldest daughter of Dr. J. H. Townend, of Christchurch. The 11th Earl was a captain in the Cameron Highlanders and was killed in the Great War. His daughter succeeded to the title and is the Countess of Seafield in her own right. Another son of the dowager Countess, Trevor, has a seat in the House of Lords as Baron Strathspey. He also was very well known in Oamaru and was a pupil of the Waitaki Boys' High School for some years. He still takes a great interest in the school, and is president of the English branch of the Waitaki Old Boys' Association. For many years the dowager Countess had resided in England.
