NELSON LITERARY & SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTION.

The second annual meeting of the above Institution was held on Monday evening last. The report of the secretary was highly satisfactory. The number of members is at present about sixty, Seen having been elected during the past year. Although a considerable expensehas been lately incurred in lining the building, the current subscriptions were more than sufficient to satisfy all claims. The following were the officers chosen for the ensuing year : — President, Mr. Fox; Vice President, Mr. F. Dillon Bell; Committee, Messrs. Stephens, Elliott, J. Tytler, Cautley, Bell, Jollie, Shepherd, and Sclanders; Treasurer, Mr. Jollie; Secretary, Mr. Macshane; Librarian, Mr. Jenkins. As the building is now very complete, we hope soon to see an increase of books in the library. Without donations from the members, or toe friends of the colony in England, we are aware that anything like a good library must be beyond our reach for years. We cannot however but think that if the existence of this Institution was better known at home, the liberal example of the few authors who have presented us with a copy of their works would be more generally followed.
