"The Times" Berlin correspondent says the belief! that Herr Hitler's plans will soon be executed gathers strength, as large-scale military activities unobtrusively continue. Every able-bodied man in East Prussia has been called up. Farm houses and carts have been commandeered, and women have left the farms for the towns. • Impressing of vehicles is proceeding elsewhere in Germany, ostensibly for the approaching mctorised manoeuvres. The paper's Budapest correspondent says confirmation is growing of stories about the German military forces taking over Slovakia. Reports are plentiful concerning ammunition and barbed wire dumps, the camouflaging of artillery .already in position and the requisitioning of schools for billets. "The hour now approaches," Herr Foerster, Nazi leader in Danzig, told a uniformed gathering of police. "When the hour comes we will win. The Fuehrer will solve the Danzig Corridor problem in a way similar to that in Sndetenland." The Polish official news agency emphatically denies German atrocity reports, and describe* mass arrests, evictions and persecutions as pure fantasy designed to stir up German opinion against Poland. The Polish Commissioner for Danzig. M. Chodacki, the President of the Dan/.ijr Senate, Herr Arthur Greiser. and the League Commissioner, Dr. Burckhardt, discussed the status of Danzig, upon which a deadlock was reached. It is reported that Italy increasingly favours a four-Power conference on the subject, but Germany and Poland are not interested. A message from Basle states that an anti-Swiss "whispering campaign" has begun in Southern Germany, and heavy concentration of troops near Basle has resulted in the strengthening of the Swiss garrisons on the Italian and German frontiers, while all roads and bridges are mined and guarded incessantly. Italian border garrisons are being strengthened and troops are moving up to the French frontier from Trieste, from Venice and from Milan. German trooj>s are passing across the Brenner Pass to repeatedly, arousing the hostility of the Italian Tvrolese.
