FIRMER HAND.

ACTION BY GERMANY.

Promised Czech Autonomy

Modified.

POWERS OF PROTECTOR. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, June 27. "The Times" Prague correspondent .says that under a decree issued in Berlin the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, Baron von Neurath, has been empowered to modify the autonomy law issued by the German Chancellor on March 16, when in the common interest. Further powers conferred on Baron von Neurath are the right to make law* of any kind when delay appears dangerous, and to alter the Czechoslovak laws when they run counter to the concept ; of "protection" as laid down by the Fuehrer on March 16. These laws or modifications must "be written into the Czech legal code, and do not need confirmation by the Czech Courts. Thus the Protector, whose functions were understood to be supervisory, is established as a legislator, and decrees issued last week concerning Jewish property and the prolongation of the Czech National Defence Act to the advantage of Germany are given a legal basis. The Czech Government lately has exercised practically a minor executive role in affairs of the protectorate. A Bratislava message says a decree bars Jews from the Slovak Army and compels them to serve a term of conscription in labour camps. They will gradually be eliminated from chemists' shops.
