First Round Of Doubles

Features of the play to-day in the British lawn tenuis championships at Wimbledon were the successes of New Zealand players in the men's doubles and the defeat in the women's singles »f Miss Jean Nicholl (Great Britain) by Miss D. A. Huntbach (Great Britain). Miss Nicholl is 16 years old, and has had a sensational entry into British tennis this season, having been hailed as a future champion.
Of the New Zealanders, D. C. Coombe an 4 C. E. Malfroy won a four-set match from a, German pair, A. D. Brown and J. Gunn emerged victorious in a hardfought game, and X. V. Edwards, playing with an English county player, came through a four-set match. Results were as follow:— Men's Doubles. First Round.—D. C. Coombe and C. E. Malfroy (X.Z.), beat D. Prenn and Vandeneynde (Germany), 6—4, 7 —5, 3 —<s, 6—3; J. Borotra and J. Brugnon (France) beat R. Menzel and R. Goepfert (Germany), 2—6, 4 —6, 6 —3, 6—4, 6—2; A. D. Brown and J. Gunn (N.Z.) beat Anderson and Harrison, 6—4, 6—4, <i—ij E. T. Cooke and Riggs (United States) beat E. J. Filby and L. Shafli (Great Britain), 6—3, 6 —3, 6—2; X. V. Edwards (X.Z.) and R. Morton (Great Britain) beat Bayley (Great Britain) and J. H. Ho (China), 6 —3, 6—2, 2 6, 7—5. Women's Singles. • First Round.—Miss D. A. Huntbach (Great Britain) beat Miss J. Xicholl (Great Britain), 6 —B, 6—4, 6 2; Mise H. Jacobs (United States)' beat' Mrs. Haylock (Great Britain), 6—o, 6 2; Miss G. Wheeler (United States) beat Mi*s B. M. Xuthall (Great Britain), 7—5, 2— ii, i> —2.
