Semi-officially Whitehall declares that Mr. Chamberlain's statement makes it clear that Britain and Fiance will defend Poland if Poland defends herself, also that if Poland fights over Danzig Britain and France will light also. However, it docs not rule out the possibility of German and Polish negotiations over Danzig.

The City regarfls Mr. Chamberlain's speech as the turning point. The majority are of opinion that Herr Hitler must now choose between war and peace, and that the period of the dictators facing the world with a series of faits accompli is ending.

It is learned in official circles at Whitehall that the Prime Minister's statement was made because, in view of the German incursion into Bohemia and Moravia, it is no longer possible to take the slightest risk.

The suggestion that the statement was made as the result of some information that Germany is contemplating sensational steps is without foundation. Political circles note that the assiirance 4o Poland is not balanced by any obligation on her side except those which she may be already under because of her alliance with France.
