REPAIRING WAR'S RAVAGES
(Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 20, "The age of miracles is not past," said a member of the Wandsworth Board of Guardians, in referring to the latest achievement of the noted expert in plastic surgery, Mr. Gillies, F.R.C.S., a New Zealander. The reference was to the restoration by the surgeon of the face of an inmate ot' a local hospital, whose nose, eyelid, and cheek were blown off in the war. The speaker added that the patient was now handsomer than any member of j the Guardians.
A recent writer commenting on £ remarkable case of f ce restoration by Mr Gillies, said the service given hum mitj by enabling such cases of hideous dis figurement to again walk in the light o day among their fellov. men was incal culable. This distinguished surgeon wa: led to adopt plastic surgery as his lifeworl through his efforts to assist those maimec soldiers, who, though their bodies wen sufficiently sound, were debarred fron participation in everyday life by facia disfigurement. Mr. Gillies was born ii Dunedin in 188' J. He is the son of Mr Robt. Gillies, a former M.H.R. Afte attending YVanganui College he went t< Cambridge University, and from there ti St. Bartholomew's. He was attached t< the K.A.M.C. during the war and ha since held many hospital appointments He is now chief plastic surgeon at tb Queen's Hospital for Facial Injuries ii Kent. Mr. Gillies was awarded the C.B.E in 1920.
