Persimmon Wins the Derby.

At the Ep9om Spring Meeting to-day, the 118 th contest took place for the Derby, with the following result :— H.R. H. The victory of Persimmon in the Derby would, no doubt, cause the greatest scene of enthusiasm that: bas been witnessed at Epsom Downs since the institution of the great " classic" race. H.K.H. the Prince of Wales has always been a supporter of the English turf, but it was not until this year that he owned something worthy of being borne by his colour — •« purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, black velvet cap with gold fringe." Persimmon did nob start in the Two Thousund Guineas last month won by St. Frusquin being specially reserved for the Derby. Last Beason Persimmon smarted three times, winning two of bis engagements. He made his debut at Royal Ascot in June, when he won the Coventry Stakes of £1,724, defeating seven others. His next essay was at Goodwood in July. He was again successful winning the Richmond Stakes of £827 from four others. Persimmon was pulled out for the Middle Pnrk Plate later in the season, bub he only gob third, St. Frusquin proving the winner. Persimmon was trained by Mr R. Marsh ab Egerton House, Newmarket. Last month the Prince of Wales won tho Ono Thousand Guineas with Thais.
