THE ECLIPSE STAKES,

The result of the seventh contest for the ten thousand pounds Eclipse Stakes run at Sahdown on Friday last was a severe blow to.the sporting quidnuncs, who declared emphatically that Isinglass' victory over Ladas was .one of those flukes which ,ever and apon occurs in the course of turt over a course longer by a quarter of a mile, MrMcCalmont'strJßle-crov/ned colt asserted I hig,Bnp«ffiiflritftpy i e'j;. } Lqrd,Ros,eb 4 ery:3.three-. year-old on Friday, is a very.decisive fashion, after a well-placed race from the start.; Only seven animals went to the post for the rich prize, viz.. Isinglass (4yrs, lOat 21b), Ladas (3yrs, 9st4lb), Ravensbury t^yrs, 9sb 131b), Raeburn (4yra, lOst 21b), Throßtle (3yrs,Bst 121b), Irish Wake (4yra, 9sb 61b), and Priestholmo;(3yrs, Bst 81b). Tho latter gee-gee, as speedy an animal over seven furlongs as one may wish to Bee, was pub in to make the pace for Mr McCalmont's first string. And right well ho performed his mission. The field gob away to a beautifully even start, but Priosbholme broke the line before 50 yards had been covered, and coming away as fast as ho could pub hoofs to ground the colt quickly led a couple of lengths. Isinglass was at the head of the rest with Ravensbury and Ladas ab his girthß. Keeping up tho high pressure, Priestholmo waa three lengths or more ahead of his -table companion on the quarter-mile, and Isinglass going in fine form was about the same distance ahead of Ladas and Ravensbury. So the field went for the mile, but then Ladas, full of running, passed the game Ravensbury, and a little later Priesfholme dropped back, pumped out. Ladas took second place ab the same instant, and at once challenged Isinglasc. Amid breathless silence the Premier's colt gradually crepb up to his Newmarket conqueror, and finally there waa bub a neck's length between tbe pair. A momentary struggle, and then down came Loates' whip and in answer to the cub Isinglass commenced to forge ahead. In a few strides he had drawn clear, and amidst a perfect storm of cheering sailed, home a full length ahead of tho Premier's colt. Ladas had done his bost; his distressed condition after the race Bhowed that, bub Isinglasa had still plenty lefb in him. Ravensbury finished third, three lengths behind Ladas, and so proved the correctness of the Newmarket Stakes form. The time of the race was 2 mm 133 ec and the value of the stakes £9,285. The betting at-the: start accurately foreshadowed the issue. Backers laid 5t04 on Isinglass, and cheerfully accepted 13 to 8 about Ladas. Ravensbury had friends at 25 to 1. Raeburn figured at 33's, Throstle ab 40's, and Irish \A ake at 100 to 1. About Prieethqlme one bet was made of 250 to 1. Notes. : The sale of Mr "Manton'a" horses in training, fixed for last Monday week, was postponed, and during the Second July Meeting both Adoration (by Hermit-De-votion) and Beggars Opera (by Macheath —•Sb. Petronel, as you know, waß by Musket—Crytbera (by Hesperus by Bay Middleton). Son of a Gun started favourite. The Australian-owned Saintly (by Sb. Simon—Lonely), whose in and out running since she started favourite for the Brockleaby Stakes at Lincoln lasb March, has been most exasperating, was the heroine of tbe big two-year-old race at Sandown Park lasb Saturday. This was tho National Breeders' Produce Stakes of 5,000 soys., for wbich a baker's dozen of smart two-year-olds wenb to the post. Mr Houldsworth's Cheery, Bsb Hlb, started a warm favourite at 2 to 1, the New. Stakes, winner Kissing Cup, ft- 61b* -coming next in demand at 4 to 1, whilst) 11 to 2,wae laid on MrD. Cooper's Float, Ssblllb, 10 to,l the same owner's Saintly, 9sb 61b, and 100. to b any other. Mr .Cooper, started nob merely Float., and Saintly, but a ragged outsider named Oleander, 9st, who finished last. The stake is the richest the New South Wales sportsmen have captured since they took to racing in England.
