DESTRUCTION OF AN OLD LANDMARK.

CHRISTOHUROH, August 22. The residence at Ilam, destroyed by fir© early this morning, was a' wooden house containing about thirty rooms, and was built m the early days of the province by Mr Watts Russell, a member of- the Provincial Council. It was occupied at one time by Mr Leonard Harper, and subsequently by Mr Patrick Campbell, and lately it has been the residence of Countess do Fresuedo. The Countess is m Sydney, and a caretaker was m charge He was awakened about 4 a.m. by the fire, and had only time to gather a, few clothes and escape. Nothing i was saved. The house was insured m the Commercial Union for £2000, but it is not known what amount was on the furniture.
