Coronation and Fallen Troopers' Memorial.

The Executive Committee appointed to arrange for the erection of a combined memorial of the coronation and m memory of the troopers from the Asiiburton District who lost their lives m the South African war, invitod tenders for the erection of the memorial designed by Mr Hurst-Seagers. Owing to the present "high price of material and lubour, however, the amount of the lowest tender received was much m excess of the funds at the Committee's disposal. Tenders were thereupon obtained for the erection of a memorial upon a smaller scale; and a tender at a satisfactory figure has been received; but before the work can be gone on. with, further subscriptions are necessary,. The total cost of the memorial, including incidentals, will he about .£3OO, but at present only some £200 is available, including the Government subsidy, which has not yet been paid. The response hitherto made for subscriptions to the fallen troopers' memorial has been rather disappointing. Such memorials are being erected m all parts of the colony, and some places with not a fourth part of the population of the town and county of Ashburton have already erected men'Orials to fallen troopers ; more costly than the combine ■I memorial of the coronation and fallen troopers which it is proposed to erect m Ashburton. Subscriptions can be s«nt to the Mayor or Town Clerk. Mount Soraers stone will be largely used m the construction of the memorial, and gifts of this stone or other material required would be just as acceptable as cash. Might, too, our local Volunteers not contrive to get up some entertainment which would attract a good attendance, and yield a substantial sum towards the cost of the work ?
