NEWS AND NOTES.

Two cases of mild influenza—one in the Mount Somcrs district and one in the Borough of Ashburton—have been reported to the Hospital Board. A total of eight cases have been reported to the board since the beginning of the month. One case of scarlet fever in the I.auriston district was reported to the hoard yesterday. At present there arc seven cases of scarlet fever in the County Hospital. The fact tiiat the borough has been in darkness for some time owing to the gas contract not being renewed, pending the installation of electric light, has called forth very severe comment. The Gas Company naturally disclaims any responsibility in the matter, their contract for street lighting having ceased at tho end of April last. The manager of the Electric Supply Company states that the installation of the borough street lighting is now practically complete. The company is waiting the arrival of a transformer, which is necessary before all the street lamps can be used. The lights on East Street have been switched on for a short time, and from appearances they will be a vast improvement on the old-fashioned gas lamps, especially as they are .suspended in the centre. The residents of Ncthcrby and the Canterbury Education Board do not appear to see eye to eye in regard to the location oT the proposed side school. The board thinks that the school should be located on the road bounding the eastern portion of the Ashburton Show Grounds, while the residents maintain that the Princess Street site is the most convenient locality. The latter is one mile from the Hampstead School and over a mile from the Borough School. The funeral of Private D. Sullivan, who died at the County Hospital (as the result of an accident at Rakaia), took place yesterday. A party of returned soldiers acted as pall-bearers, and the "Last Post" was sounded over the grave.
