COUNTY COUNCILS.

TAWERA. A special meeting of tlie Tawera County Council was attended by Messrs Seymour (chairman), Evans, Johnson, .Manson, Milliken, and Rutledge. The certified balance-sheet for the last financial year was considered and was ordered to be printed. After the special meeting the ordinary meeting of the council was held, the same members being present. The Minister of Railways wrote relative to the erection and maintenance of warning boards at the various level crossings in the district. The Department would supply and erect the notice boards provided the council would agree to maintain them. It was decided to reply that the council approved of the suggestion and would maintain the boards provided the other counties in the neighbourhood took similar action. The Paparua County Council wrote stating that it had been arranged to hold a meeting of delegates from the various county councils on Wednesday, August 5, to discuss the advisability of forcing a Local Counties' Association, and asking the council to send two delegates! It was arranged that the chairman and one -member should attend. Mr W. J. Atkinson wrote asking for a return of all reserves in the county, the return to contain the following information : —Area of each reserve, description, present occupier, when last let and for what term, and the half-yearly rental now ,being paid. The clerk was instructed to reply that the greater part of the information was contained in the balance-sheet, and that a number of copies' would be available to the ratepayers as soou as it was printed. Mr James Taylor interviewed the council and asked to have some repairs done to the road leading to the coal pit. It was decided that as the road in question is on private property, nothing could be done.

AMURI. At the monthly meeting of the Amu ri Comity Council there were present: — Messrs D. Rutherford (chairman), Atkinson, J. H. Dayison, F. Davison, Northcote, Pulley, M'Rae, and W. T. Derrett, mail contractor,, wrote askiug that, as he was now carrying the mail by motor, a bridge should be built over Deadman's Greek, as that creek was impassable' in flood time. The overseer was instructed to draw up plans and specifications, tenders to be in by next meeting. It was agreed to pay half the cost of the fence between the Waiau school grounds and the council's reserve. Mr George J. It was decided to regrade and metal the part leading off the Mount Palm Road to the last house on the road. The special order levying a special rate of three-farthings in the pound on the Waiau township river protection district was confirmed. The ordinary rate of one halfpenny in the pound was struck on all rateable properties now appearing in the Valuation roll for the several ridings in the county. No tenders were received for the. cleaning of the head works of the. water race. The tender of Mr 11. Farrow was accepted at £69 8/- for the ITauiner motor road improvements. CHEVIOT.

Messrs T. 6.' Gee (chairman), O. L. Rutherford, T. Meikle, C. Barnes, T. Stevenson, and; L. R. Macfarlane were present at the monthly meeting of the Cheviot County Council. The North Canterbury Hospital and, Charitable Aid Board acknowledged receipt of the'council's protest against the levy, ajid stated that ,it hoped the capital expenditure in future would be considerably reduced. The Port Robinson Domain. Board wrote drawing the council's attention to several repairs to roads , necessary in the Seward riding, and it was resolved to have somp slight repairs effected to the Brothers Road and to attend to the other matters as funds permitted. The board also wrote suggesting that the council should approach the Government-in regard to the encroachment of the sea at Gore Bay. The letter was received. Messrs J. S. Jackson and ;J. Murray wrote urging the necessity for reducing grades and straightening the road at Serpentine cutting, and it was. resolved to .inspect this road on July 22. The Hpspital and Charitable Aid Board wrote forwarding a copy of the sanitary mspectjprreport on Domett school grounds. It was decided to forward the report to the school committee and request that the nuisances referred to iti the 1 report should be abated. The special order dividing the Hawkswood riding into two ridings was confirmed. : It was resolved to write to the Railway Department to see if shelter trees could not be- procured and planted near Etheltpn station, also to request the Departmeiit to provide fasteners for gates across r6ads that could be opened by horsemen without dismounting. The clerk was directed to give notice to persons who had trees planted on north sides of roads that such trees must be removed or cut to a height not exceeding 10ft. Accounts for £406 18/- were passed for payment.
