NEWS IN BRIEF.

The lire brigade wishes to acknowledge the receipt of a donation of £2 from Mrs Stevens, of 105 Brougham Street, iu recognition of the services of the brigade at her residence receutly. At present there is a considerable shortage of labour to work the coal boats at Lyttelton. This morning there were upwards of forty men short to work the various boats in port.

A generous donation has been forwarded towards the Open-air Home for Children Fund. The secretary, Mr C. W. Hervey, this morning received a cheque for £SO from Mr R. E. M'Dougall, of Aulsebrook and Co., to be devoted to the furtherance of /the movement.

A slight accident occurred to-day on the Sumner road. A horse driven by a. boy in a butcher's cart took the bit between its teeth and bolted over the embankment by the boat sheds, a drop of some four or five feet. One of the shafts was broken, but otherwise no serious damage was effected.

Through the kindly practical sympathy of ladies in Addington, Opawa, and Sydenham, drawing-room meetings in connection with the Open-Air HonU have been arranged in each of these suburbs. They will be addressed by Sister Rochfort, and committees will be formed to canvass the districts. It is to be hoped that these committees will have no difficulty in findii.g canvassers. Last Tuesday evening at the Heaths cote Literary and Debating Society a debate was held, the subject being, "That the present naval policy is satisfactory to New Zealand." Messrs Morris, W. A. M'Dowell, and Connal took the affirmative, and Messrs Weir, H. M'Millan, and W. Burnell took the negative. The judge (Mr Gates) declared the affirmative winners.

No little iuterest was caused yesterday at the meeting of the two old rivals; Lyttelton Past v. Present scholars of the District High School, in an association football game. The match took place at the recreation ground, Lyttelton, before 3; very fair attendance, and after a very hard and exciting game, the Past scholars proved too many for their juniors, and were victorious by 1 goal (shot by M'Neillie) to nil. The play throughout was in favour of the Old Boys, and only fine defence by Hewstoxte kept the score down.
