Superintendent Dwyer returned from Timaru last evening. Mr Frank Davison, of Culverdeu, is in (/im3tehurch for a few days.

Mr and Mrs Oweu Hope, of Kangiora, are at present staying at the United Service Hotel. ,

The Hon. T. Fergus,, of Dunediu, arrived in C'hristchurch thi;« morning from Wellington. C v Mr W. P. Spencer, of Belfast, returned by the Maunganui from Sydney yesterday. Mr Charles Hancock, .of Auckland, returned north by the Wahiue last night. Mr Hugh Donniston, who is now a resident of Argentina, is at present in Ghriscohurch on a visit to his parents, Mr Justice Demiiston and Mfs Dennistoil.

I)r. C. Coleridge Parr, Professor of Physics as Canterbury College, will for Adelaide ou Tuesday next. He will be away for about a month.

, Mr A. Xj. Parsons has been elected chairman of the Christchurch Fire Board for the fourth year in succession, kr 11. IX. P. usbridge has been elected deputy chairman.

The' death occurred at Greymouth' last night of a very old resident, Mrs Hannand, the mother of ,Mr M'i Hannau, a well-known solicitor. Deceased arrived on the West Coast in 1865, anti-kept hotels and v a store in the early days. Up to the time of her death she was licensee of the Recreation Hotel. Mrs Hamian was 82, years of age. —Press Association. The Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways, arrived at Waihi this morning, and deputations from the Settlers' Association and the Borough Council waited on hint with reference to local railway requirements. The Minister promised to give the requests his attention. Later he left for Ivatikati and Taurariga, route to Rotorua. —Press Association.

Mr 0. C. Reade, one of the delegates from the British Town-planning Associations, returned from the south yesterday. He had visited Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, and InvereargiU, and in each town he received liberal assistance in arranging the course of lectures which hj« will shortly give. Professor E. 111. Prince, Commissioner of Fiaheries for Canada, and Mr F. L. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries; in New Zealand, arrived from the West Coast last evening, after inspecting some of the hatcheries and rivers there. This morning Professor Prince went to Soufchbridge to enquire i»j;o- the conditions of Lake Ellesmere. ' ■>- .

Mr I*. M. Casey, a well-known sfcatiou holder of Canberra, New Sout*h Wales, was a passenger by the Wahiae to Wellington last night. Mr Casey, •who is accompanied by his daughter, will catch the Sydney boat from Wellington this afternoon. During his quick run through the South Island Mr Casey inspected several properties.

This afternoon the staff of the Clarendon Hotel tuadc a presentation of a handsome marble clock to Mr 11. Price, late licensee of the Clarendon, and Mr.) Price, who are leaving for Wellington. The presentation wan made by the chef (Mr P. W. Evans), who is aino president of the Christehurch branch of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees' Union, on behalf of the assembled staff, and in doing so said that if ali employers realised as Mr Price di<l that employees were not merely machines for carrying oat certain duties, bat that they were interested in their business, it would go a long way towards eliminating unrest amongst the workers. ( Mr Price, in responding, said that lie had been engaged in several different businesses, but had never thought to secure such a willing staff as he had had in the Clarendon Hotel.
